Elvis Blog – Post #12

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Tuesday 7 August 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
“I don’t know what the fuss is all about. I’m just a guy who makes music; no different from anybody else.”

ELVIS TRIVIA:
In which movie was Elvis’s character named after a famous knight of the roundtable?

ELVIS HISTORY:
Saturday 7 August 1954
Elvis is becoming more popular, and people in the South are starting to take notice of his wild movements on stage. This persona is a far cry from his early years when he was considered shy, “quiet and well-mannered.” In 1945 his teacher, Mrs. Grimes, encouraged him to enter a children’s day talent contest at Mississippi Alabama’s Fair and Dairy Show. He had to stand on a chair to reach the microphone. Dressed in a cowboy suit, he took second place with “Old Shep.” The prize was five dollars and free rides at the fair. What Elvis would later recall was that he got a spanking that day.

Vito’s Elvis First Tuesday Fan Gathering
Some of the I’ll Remember You, Elvis Fan Club members converge on Vito’s about 6 PM and sit around and eat and eat and eat and talk about Elvis and what’s going on in our own lives. The regulars include Tracy Duncan and her parents, Glenda and Big Joe, along with Rhea (who the waiter calls Pricilla), Faye and James, James’s sister, Joyce and Dennis, their granddaughter Tracy and her new fiancé, and of course, Rick Marino, Jim Flaherty, and Betty Hayes. My daughter, Jayme, and I are usually first to arrive. Tonight the group will no doubt be talking about Elvis Week and the 28 or so Elvis tribute artists who will compete for the Ultimate ETA title in Memphis. This year the contestants include Ted Torres, Kevin Mills, Victor Trevino, Jr., and Bobby Simpkins. I wouldn’t want to be a judge this year. These guys are fabulous.
