Elvis Blog – Post #15

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Friday 10 August 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
“I guess I must’ve sat there at least three hours. I sang everything I knew—pop stuff, spirituals, just a few words of anything I remembered. I was an overnight sensation. A year later after they heard me the first time, they called me back.”

ELVIS TRIVIA:
How high did Elvis’s temperature rise in the song “Burning love?”

ELVIS HISTORY:
Monday 9 August 1954
On the ninth of May, 1954 Elvis and Dixie had heard Oral Roberts (while attending his crusade)…In that week (on Saturday the 15th) Elvis went to the Hi-Hat on South 3rd …he wore a bolero jacket and pink shirt and was his own guitar accompaniment. He didn’t get the job. He said that the owner told him to go back to driving a truck. That may have been Elvis’s joke, but this was not his only rejection. The year before, in August of ’53, he had been rejected by Sears Roebuck and Kroger’s grocery store. He was looking for job where he could “keep clean.”

AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA:
Friday 10 August 2012
Third day of Early Voting
Once again, I’m heading for City Hall in quaint, beautiful, historic Fernandina Beach, Florida, to work in the early voting effort. The little barrier island this city sits on is two miles wide and 13 miles long. Even though St. Augustine town claims the title of oldest city in the U.S. Fernandina Beach is the site of the oldest continually operated hotel in Florida (Florida House) and the oldest bar (Palace Saloon) and has a ton of ghosts. No less than four ghost tours are conducted on the island in addition to the buggy rides.

Near Christmas, five beautifully decorated private homes are open to the public for tours. In November there’s a cookie tour in private homes. It’s a fun place to live. Friday nights the downtown street is closed off and a band sets up…

BTW, the man who moved this town to its current site had something in common with Tom Parker. Can you guess what it was? See end of page.

TRIVIA ANSWER:
109 degrees.

FERNANDINA BEACH TRIVIA ANSWER:
Parker and Yulee didn’t like the names they were given, so they changed them.
