Elvis Blog – Post #19

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Tuesday 14 August 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
“I would lie awake wondering what I was going to do. I really wasn’t much good at anything. At school I’d been only an average student. I mean I didn’t flunk but I didn’t do too good, either. I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to make something out of myself.”

ELVIS TRIVIA:
Elvis had seven No. 1 easy-listening hits. At seven weeks, which easy-listening hit stayed the longest on the charts?

ELVIS HISTORY:
Sunday 15 August 1954
Elvis is on his way to the big time, but back in August 1951 he had some difficulties in school because he started to hang out with musicians in local blues joints and what was called ‘gospel sings.’ He made friends with Red West who will defend Elvis on several occasions. Elvis was such a regular in town that BB King and JD Summer both recall (in later years) seeing Elvis on Beale Street and at the Memphis Auditorium ‘gospel nights’… As a junior in high school, he should have been studying, his mother thought. The scholastic difficulties will continue into his senior year but Elvis knew his future was not in academics. His focus was on music, thank goodness.

Tonight: Heading For Elvis Week In Memphis Via Georgia
I am packed and ready to go to Memphis for Elvis Week as soon as the polls close at 7, we get the official count, and put everything away. My suitcases are in the car and my daughter is waiting to be picked up AT 9. I hope there is nothing wrong with the ballot count—if there is even one ballot off we have to stay until the mistake is found, and it doesn’t matter how long that takes. If everything goes right, we will be in Macon by midnight, then on to Memphis the next day. We are standing honor guard for the candle light ceremony with Sandi Pichon’s TCB Elvis Style fan club at 8:30.
