Elvis Blog – Post #2

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Saturday 28 July 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
”I was raised in a pretty decent home and everything. My folks always made me behave, whether I wanted to or not.”

ELVIS TRIVIA:
What Elvis film won Golden Globe’s 1972 best documentary Award?

ELVIS HISTORY:
Wednesday 28 July, 1954
Ads appeared for an Overton Park show (Memphis) starring Slim Whitman. One advertised Ellis Presley. Another left his name off completely. Elvis sang “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and “That’s All Right Mama.”

That week, Elvis had earned 46.00 from Crown Electric for forty hours plus four hours of overtime…More on that show in other blogs.

AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA:

My daughter and I just got back from the annual Tampa Elvisfest. I will blog about that tomorrow. Twenty awesome ETAs put on a bang-up show…Two surprises: Jim Shirah fabulous W*APE disk jockey was there to greet the crowd, and Ted Torres sang…We have been long-time Ted fans, and he just gets better and better…Along with Betty Hayes, we are going to see Ted in Zellwood, near Orlando, Saturday night. Can’t wait.

Our Jacksonville “I’ll Remember You, Elvis Fan Club” is so excited that Elvis Week is coming up. We’ve been planning the trip for months. I’ll be blogging from there…Eleven friends—seven from Jacksonville area and four from Kansas City, Missouri area—will be there for the three Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist contests. The competition this year will be incredible with Victor Trevino, Jr., Kevin Mills, Bobby Simpkins, Ted Torres, and so many more competing…We also have tickets to Bill Cherry, Brandon Bennett, and Cody Slaughter’s shows…We all have our favorites.

TAMPA, FLORIDA:
Friday 27 July 2012
My daughter, Jayme, and I traveled down to Plant City near Tampa because we heard the Elvis Festival was awesome, and the winner of that competition would go on to Memphis in August and compete for the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist title. We were not disappointed.

Twenty incredible ETAs sing two songs each. Then the field which included Joey Trites, Cody Wise, Jay Zanier, Jeff Lewis, and Jason Baglio was narrowed down until the winner, Jerome Jackson, was announced. The six judges included the legendary ETA Rick Marino of our own fan club in Jacksonville. A single point separated the winner from the next highest score.

The Jacksonville group went over to hear Ted jam with other ETAs afterward at the event hotel. In the early morning hours, we said goodnight to Vickie Lee May, the President of the Tampa Bay TCB fan club; Sue Manuszak, Ted Torres Roustabout Fan Club President; Arelia Sayer, sister of W*APE disk jockey Jim Shirah and Vice President of Ted Torres Fan Club; and the others, and finally went to bed. Most of the ETAs and fans—including the Jacksonville party animals—not mentioning names (Rhea, James, Faye, Betty, and Diane) were still going strong.
