Oscar Davis loved the appeal Elvis had for women, and also loved that Elvis was controversial. The reaction of frenzied women and the angry press was exactly what he wanted in a performer. He reported the phenomena to Col Parker, his boss. Elvis was happy to play the Louisiana Hayride (called the Junior Grand Ole Opry) and his performances were played on KWKH Radio. The Hayride was known as the Cradle to the Stars. After his first performance, Elvis met the man would become his drummer, DJ Fontana.

Getting lots of rain and wind from the outer bands of tropical storm (hurricane?) Isaac. I can see the white caps and the ocean is dark gray. We were told to get our hurricane kit ready. Mine was easy. I have a pristine garbage can which had been marked Earthquake Kit in San Francisco, and Tornado Kit in Corpus Christi. It is now re-marked Hurricane Kit. The first kit I put together was a disaster. I spent a lot of time stocking it with champagne, chocolate truffles, fancy crackers, Velveeta, peanut butter, and canned nuts. Of course, I raided the kit on a regular basis. It is never a good idea to stock your kit with good food for an emergency. Experts recommend dog food. Excellent idea. Trust me, it would be a true emergency before you got into your stash. I have not gone to dog food, but do have a lot of tuna, canned beans, and soda crackers. Maybe I’ll add a bottle of Pinot noir.

RECIPE OF THE DAY:
Strawberry slushies:
Put on your big girl pants, this one is for adults only.
You’ll need a 750 ml bottle of Riesling.
Chill one (covered) cup of the Riesling
Puree 2 c. hulled strawberries with 1 t. lemon juice, & 2 t. sugar in food processor
Pour into ice cube trays
Freeze solid
To serve, puree the ice cubes with remaining wine in a blender
Makes 6 servings

TIP OF THE DAY:
Buy a book at a garage sale? If it is old and musty, sprinkle a half-inch of cat litter in a lidded plastic container. Seal the book inside for 24 hours. It will smell like a book should.
