Elvis Blog – Post #4

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Monday 30 July 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
“I always felt that someday, somehow, something would happen to change everything for me, and I’d daydream about how it would be.”

ELVIS TRIVIA:
What did Elvis refer to when he said something about realizing you’re not a kid anymore. You have to grow up fast.

ELVIS HISTORY:
Friday 30 JULY 1954
Elvis performs the two songs that had been released, at the Overton Park Shell, Memphis. Dixie Locke, Elvis’s girlfriend until 1955, Sam Philips, and Elvis’s parents attended…many versions of the knee action abound…

One is that Elvis’s idol had performed on stage using that style and Elvis copied it unconsciously, because he admired him so much.

Another version is that Elvis was completely unaware that his legs were shaking because he was so nervous, and asked, “What’d I do? What’d I do?” The supposed response was, “I don’t know but go out and do it again”…

Whatever the truth is, the fact that the crowd went wild is not in question. After the trio did two songs they knew well enough to perform in public, they did an encore, “Blue Moon off Kentucky.”
Elvis had given an interview to the local DJ Dewey Phillips earlier in July after Dewey played “That’s All Right (Mama), written by Aurhur Crudup,” fourteen or more times along with “Blue Moon of Kentucky” on his radio show, “Red, Hot and Blue.” The response (to “That’s All Right”) was strong and immediate.

Dewey had friends find Elvis at the movie theater and whisk him over to the station. Elvis told him he didn’t know anything about being interviewed. Dewey cautioned him. Just don’t say anything dirty.
Elvis and the trio will be heading to Texas (along with Red West) in August where they play small clubs and do local radio shows.

In the meantime, “That’s All Right (Mama)” is climbing the charts.
