The Presley’s were encouraged by a talent scout to have Elvis sign a major management contract with Col Tom Parker. The colonel had sent out Hank Williams’ son to study Elvis doing a show and report back. He told Parker that Elvis was sexy, provocative, and appealed to all women. By this time Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys are existing on junk food and going without sleep.

Today is my regular Wednesday critique meeting day. We are a group of three. Steve Covey writes Science Fiction, Sherry Czerniejewski writes serious Literary, and I write nearly everything, but Mystery is my first love. Both of my partners write better than I do and are smarter (That goes for my sister and her daughters, my daughters, my brother, as well as Kurt, Justin, and Max Trolle, and several other people.) I think that’s the same rule as for playing tennis. Never play tennis with someone who’s a worse player than you are. You pick up their bad habits. I hope my critique partners don’t see this or they will drop out of the group. We’ve been meeting for a couple of years now and have not killed each other yet, but we write separate manuscripts and never collaborate. I hear the rule for writing in collaboration is: Live at least 500 miles apart so that by the time you load your gun and drive to your co-author’s house, you’ve pretty much forgotten what you’re mad about. In case you’re wondering what the difference between my relatives and those other people who write well, and me? They don’t have the burning desire to write. That’s another reason they’re smarter than me.

TIP OF THE DAY:
If you are thinking of decorating your child’s room with clown motif, you might want to think again. A survey of 250 pediatric patients found that all 250 of them hated clowns painted on the ward walls. I have never understood why people are afraid of clowns. Of course, in my Ozark hometown of 108, we never had a circus or a clown come visit us—why would they?
