Elvis Blog – Post #66 – From Missouri with Love by Sandy Wright
DATELINE: Pleasant Hill, Missouri
Remembering Tuesday 2 October 2012
ELVIS QUOTE:
“More than anything else, I want the folks back at home to think right of me.”
ELVIS TRIVIA:
Who was Rising Sun?
ELVIS HISTORY:
May 1955
Elvis and the band traveled with Sun’s Package show. Admission was $1 to see Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and others. Elvis, Black, Moore, and Fontana played wherever they could. Sometimes for gas money for the car they sometimes slept in, often for meals. Although tough and grueling, each performance was a practice session for the time to come. The financial reward was small, but the experience was huge.
HERE’S WHAT I DID TODAY:
Thank you for the invitation to guest blog. By way of introduction, I am Sandy Wright, an Elvis fan living in Pleasant Hill, Missouri (near Kansas City), with my husband of 36 years, Mel, and our daughter and grandson. Our son and his wife live within 20 minutes from us with our other two grandbabies. I worked for a paycheck for 35 years, but now stay home. Life is good!
Recovering today from a busy weekend—had an old-fashioned hayride Saturday night on my husband’s family homestead. We roasted hotdogs over a bonfire and brought side dishes and desserts. I took yummy Dutch Coleslaw (recipe below) and a hashbrown casserole. Then we hopped in the wagon full of straw and went for a ride. I think we counted 25 in attendance. On Sunday Mel and I made a quick round trip to the lake (2.5 hours one-way), and last evening I played with grandkids while Mel and our son worked on deer stands in the woods. Whew!
Last weekend I enjoyed seeing Bobby Simkins in concert with a group of friends (Bobby is a favorite local Elvis Tribute Artist who made the top 15 in EPE’s Ultimate ETA contest in Memphis). As usual Bobby was great, doing the first half in the 68 Special black leather and the second half in the blue swirl jumpsuit. His voice was strong, and he was flirty. Good show! Next weekend will be exciting also because a group of us is driving to Harrison, AR to see Cody Slaughter in concert! You may remember that Cody won the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist competition in Memphis last year. We love our ETAs!
JOKE OF THE DAY:
In olden days, a female teacher wrote an assignment high up on the chalkboard. One of the boys in the class giggled.
Teacher: “What’s so funny?”
Student: “I saw your garter!”
Teacher: “Get out of my classroom, Joe. I don’t want to see you for three days!”
She reached again.
Teacher: “What’s so funny?”
Student: “I just saw both of your garters!”
Teacher: “Get out of my classroom, Billy! I don’t want to see you for three weeks!”
Embarrassed and frustrated, she dropped the eraser and bent over to pick it up. There was a burst of laughter from Johnny. She quickly turned to see Johnny leaving the classroom.
Teacher: “Where do you think you’re going?” she asked. Johnny:
Johnny: “From what I just saw, my school days are over!”
