Elvis Blog – Post #74 – The 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake
ELVIS QUOTE:
“It’s all great. I used to sneak in over the fence but this is the first time I’ve been escorted in.” What was he talking about?”
ELVIS TRIVIA:
Was Elvis left handed or right handed?
ELVIS HISTORY:
Blackboard Jungle featured Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock” which sold 25 million singles and was #1 for 8 weeks on billboard. Rock and roll was blamed for teens keeping time to music with their bodies. Jitterbug evolved from the Lindy Hop & teens were rockin’. Elvis somehow got blamed even more than Haley or the movie.
REMEMBERING Tuesday 17 October 1989:
The Loma Prieta Earthquake Part 4:
1989 was a strange year. The Berlin wall came down, and the big one—that is, the earthquake San Francisco had been waiting for since 1906, finally hit. Luckily, they knew it was coming, and had many had built new buildings to earthquake standards, and so in the end, only 69 people lost their lives. The story i heard was that the bay bridge collapsed in one section because bolts that were supposed to be 8 inches long, were a bit shorter in some places. It was rumored that in the mania to save money, contractors sometimes cut a few corners. A few pennies per hundred here, a few pennies per hundred there. I was working on treasure island near where the bridge section failed, and days later, after i moved to San Francisco, we had to drive from the San Francsico side of the bridge, one car at a time, going no more than ten miles an hour. It was spooky. All alone up there. The wind howled, and it seemed like years to get across the span. People in Alameda Island who were in the Posey Tube at 5:04 on 17th of Octoer jumped out and looked at their tires. It felt like a blown tire to them.
JOKE OF THE DAY:
A doctor, a lawyer, a little boy, and a priest were on a small private plane which developed engine trouble. Unfortunately, there were only four parachutes.
The pilot jumped.
Doctor: I save lives, so I must live,” and jumped out.
Lawyer: Lawyers are the smartest people in the world. I deserve to live.” He jumped.
Priest: “My son, I’ve lived a long and full life. Take the last parachute and live in peace.”
The little boy handed the parachute back to the priest.
Little Boy: “Not to worry, Father. The ‘smartest man in the world’ just jumped out wearing my back pack.”
