ELVIS QUOTE:
“I’d like to have gone, but I never thought about it. We just didn’t have the money.” What is Elvis referring to?
ELVIS TRIVIA:
What animal is mentioned in the song “Polk Salad Annie?”
ELVIS HISTORY:
Tuesday 3 August 1954
Elvis is still managed, at this point, by Scotty Moore. The trio (Elvis, Moore, and Bill Black) spend more time travelling from stage-to-stage than performing on one.
The cars Elvis used in this period were not the beautiful, expensive vehicles that he would buy later for himself, his family, and his friends—and for complete strangers. In 1954 the clunkers were old and unreliable. Sometimes there would be a big musical instrument lashed on top.
The schedule was hectic, and the shows were one-night-stands in little towns. He sang in bars, and at country fairs all over the South. Off stage he was lonely and bored, but on stage Elvis came alive and gave each audience his all, because he felt each person was special. A month earlier, on 3 July, Dixie and her family traveled to Florida on vacation.
That same day Scotty Moore had gotten a record contract (with Sam Phillips) for his band, the Starlite Wranglers. He called the Presley home to ask if Elvis would like an audition. Moore hadn’t heard Elvis yet, but Sam Phillips had recommended him. Elvis was at the movies. Gladys took the call.
AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA:

Baking brownies today even though it is in the 90’s outside. I have a Florida Sisters in Crime workshop tomorrow with Patricia Sprinkle, author of 30 mysteries and 9 other books. Pam Wells, this year’s president, can get me to do anything, so I will haul out the Ghirardelli triple chocolate mix and hope I don’t flub up. Typically, a writers’ workshop means food. I always sign up for brownies because they are pretty easy. Incredible cooks like Dolores Wilson, (author of Big Hair Flying Cows and many other books) will bring spectacular dishes requiring skill and dexterity not to mention involving a lot of work. Some people are so talented.
