Elvis Blog – Post #9

DATELINE: Amelia Island (near Jacksonville, Florida)
Remembering Saturday 4 August 2012

ELVIS QUOTE:
“Wild-looking guys, they had scars. I used to lay on the side of the road and watch . . .” Who is Elvis talking about? Answer at bottom.

ELVIS TRIVIA:
What singer did Elvis call the “greatest singer in the world?” (Hint, think dark glasses.)

ELVIS HISTORY:
Wednesday 4 August 1954
Elvis’s weekly paycheck from Crown Electric was a whopping $42.51. He will not quit his job until October. The reasons? (1) “Blue Moon of Kentucky” will hit number three later this month on “Billboards” Regional Country and Western chart. (2) He has become a regular attraction at the Eagle’s Nest and booked for three months (on weekends.)(3) “Blue Moon of Kentucky” is now listed on “Billboards” Country and Western Chart for the Mid-South.

August 1954 is a very good month for Elvis and things will only get better. Elvis acquired a Martin D-18 guitar around this time, and he is on his way.

AMELIA ISLAND, FLORIDA:
Saturday 4 August 2012
Elvis Fans in the 21st Century is not up on Amazon yet. Major disappointment. Today I’m going to the Florida Sisters in Crime Patricia Sprinkle’s workshop. Sisters in Crime (started by Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton) was founded to promote women mystery writers, and I am proud to be one.

Our local president is Pam Wells. She is our seventh president. I was the third. Jacksonville is the only chapter in Florida, and we’ve had some memorable workshops (CSI, gun experts, police & highway patrol officers, search and rescue dogs handlers, coroners, detectives, former FBI agents, many authors and crime experts). We have taken day trips (my favorite was Mercer House in Savannah) After today’s workshop, we will go to the incredible Chart House for dinner. What a rare treat.
